Bubbles, Bees & Rooftops: A Conceptual Map
The project was developed in "Mapping Citizenship," a collaborative course between Anthropology and Graphic Design departments at the American University in Cairo, co-designed and co-taught by: Ghalia Elsrakbi and Yasmine Moataz in Spring 2019. The university very much functions like a state within the bigger state of Cairo. As citizens of this mini state and students in an academic setting, we were divided into groups and assigned the task of reflecting on the concepts of security and safety on the AUC campus. Our group was assigned the rooftops. The rooftops are much less securitized than the rest of the campus. On one hand, this makes students feel safe to freely exist on the rooftops and on another hand, it puts students in unanticipated risks. This map reflects our experiences and interpretations of existing on the AUC rooftops. Design Students: Mona Waly, Salma Kafrawy and Tasneem Tawheed. Anthropology Students: Ahmed Ali Ibrahim and Sarah Nady.
